The Day I Met Brian Clough...And Other Tributes

Brian Clough’s family are among the many people who describe their personal memoriesof the charismatic football manager in this unique collection of tributes. Brian’s widow, Barbara, and their daughter Elizabeth have provided a rare insight into life with the man known as the Master Manager. Barbara recalls how they met in Middlesbrough and how his tremendous generosity remains one of her over-riding memories of her husband.

Elizabeth’s memories include travelling in her Dad’s car listening to Frank Sinatra songs. Brian’s brother Joe and sister Doreen also recount their memories in this book compiled by journalist and author MarcusAlton, who is the editor of the tribute website, brianclough.com.

This collection of anecdotes and tributes includes contributions from fans, friends and former players, collected by Marcus since he set-up then on-profit-making website over 10 years ago. Those who worked closely with Old Big ’Ead describe memorable times in his company –including the TV producer who captured unique footage of Cloughie in his back garden as he sang a surprise tribute to his old friend and commentator, Brian Moore.

There is no doubt that an encounter with Cloughie was usually unforgettable – as this book illustrates. Just ask the fan whose car broke down on the A52 (now Brian Clough Way) only to hear a knock on his window and anoffer of help from – yes, you guessed it.

A friend who ha snever spoken publicly before describes how Cloughie allowed him to be one of the few people to travel on the team bus – one of his‘missions’ being to supply pork pies for the players! He also looked after Cloughie’s sons Simon and Nigel during a Wembley cupfinal.

A former player describes for the first time how he threw a bucket of water over Cloughie by accident. You can guess the result!

A journalist who worked closely with Brian reveals how he witnessed the football legend’s inspirational man-management at first hand. Another reveals how he became Clough’s ghost-writer for a national newspaper. A former football director describes how Clough helped him support charities by donating the proceeds of newspaper interviews –and gave his Mum a bunch of roses.

Marcus Alton’s royalties from this book are going to the Brian Clough Memorial Fund, which is run by the Clough family and gives money to the types of good causes that Brian supported.

Fans may think they have heard all there is to know about Cloughie. But this book has many untold stories and tributes, demonstrating how he touched so many lives and won admirers around the world.

About the Author

Marcus was still at school when he began writing a regular sports column in the local parish magazine, securing an exclusive interview with the new chairman of Nottingham Forest FC who lived in the same village. He then joined the Newark Advertiser newspaper, winning the title of Midlands Sports Journalist of the Year. He has worked for the BBC for more than 20 years and is a senior journalist.
Marcus met Brian Clough a number of times, both as a fan and a journalist. His own memories are featured in the book. He describes for the first time what happened before and during his first interview with Cloughie, which was broadcast live. And why he was so grateful that the next interview was recorded!
It was back in August 2000 that Marcus set-up the non-profit-making website, brianclough.com. Brian later thanked Marcus personally for forwarding all the get-well e-mails to him following a liver transplant.
In 2004, Marcus went to Downing Street to deliver a petition calling for a posthumous knighthood for his hero. The petition had 7,500 names. He went on to establish the small committee of fans which raised £70,000 for the bronze statue of Cloughie in Nottingham.
This new book follows the success of his first book about Brian Clough, Young Man, You’ve Made My Day, published in 2008.
