Swansea: Flames Across The TaweAuthor: Keith MillsSwansea: Flames Across The TaweFlames Across the Tawe tells the story of firefirghting in Swansea from the early 1800s until the Swansea City Fire Brigade was absorbed into the newly-formed West Glamorgan Fire Service in 1974. Although Swansea was a thriving industrial town and seaport in the early part of the 19th century, with regard to its firefighting capabilities it was second best to some of its neighbouring and relatively smaller towns which boasted their own fire brigade and appliances, devoid of police responsibility. These set backs however, did not deter Swansea's firefighters; when they were called upon their skill and courage were second to none. Flames Across the Tawe is the result of seven years' intense research. It is a comprehensive history of firefighting in Swansea - and a tribute to the many courageous firefighters who have risked their lives to protect the city's people and property.
