The result of a collaboration between Picture the Past, Breedon and the Old Mansfield Society, Picture the Past: Mansfield is a beautiful visual tour through the history of this impressive Midlands town. Picture the Past (www.picturethepast.org.uk) is a website which was launched with Heritage Lottery funding and is collectively managed by the local authorities of Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire. Picture the Past aims to conserve and make publicly accessible the photographic heritage of the North East Midlands, thereby enabling people to see the richness and diversity of the area’s photographic collections. In this stunning book those behind the project aim to reach an audience which may be unfamiliar with the website, and to acquaint those with an interest in Mansfield with a small selection from its 60,000+ images. This excellent collection captures individual moments, frozen in time, giving a unique and very personal insight into the heart of this most characterful area of Britain.
Images in the book are drawn from the archives of the Old Mansfield Society, along with contributions from Mansfield Library, Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery, North Notts Newspapers, and the personal selection of Mr F.W Purdy, who recorded over 400 photographs of the rapidly changing face of Mansfield in the early 1970s.
