Mysterious Cambridgeshire

Mysterious Cambridgeshire is the next volume in the ‘Mysterious Counties’ series, joining best-selling titles
Mysterious Cornwall and Mysterious Lincolnshire. Exhaustively researched by the author and fully illustrated
throughout, this book is designed to show the reader a Cambridgeshire they never knew existed – a county full of
supernatural secrets and strange lore. Covering a county with four distinct regions – Cambridge, Huntingdon,
Fenland and the Soke of Peterborough – the author has unearthed hundreds of strange tales that capture the
imagination and chill the blood. Read about the legends of Robin Hood and the ghoulish history of Caxton Gibbet,
and the many myths and legends associated with Oliver Cromwell: was he really kidnapped by a monkey in
Huntingdon as a baby? Learn of the strange and sinister creatures that were believed to lurk in the county – Black
Shuck, the Shug Monkey, and freshwater mermaids among them. Find out where Satan himself has appeared on
gloomy wind-lashed nights, and also where marvelous miracles have occurred that have been attributed to the
county's many saints.
This book mixes well-known mysteries with little-known enigmas and first-hand accounts. Did a boy in
Willingham really live an entire lifetime in five years? Could it actually have been a giant spaceship that was
witnessed over the Fens in 1993? And where are the ‘cursed’ places in Cambridgeshire that seem to attract death
and disaster? Within these pages the reader will discover a Cambridgeshire rich in folklore, supernatural and
paranormal phenomena, curiosities and urban legends. From the poltergeists that invade lonely Fenland
farmsteads to the mysterious black panthers said to be roaming the countryside today, Mysterious Cambridgeshire
will change the way you look at the county.

About the author

Daniel Codd has spent years delving into supernatural history, a fascination borne out of a belief that truth is far stranger than fiction and
that even the most outlandish of folkloric stories probably has a basis in fact. His research into the paranormal has seen him poring through
archive documents, and he is endlessly fascinated by the stories of curiosities and strange phenomena that people tell him. He gains great
satisfaction from people’s interest in the subject matter, and from seeking out locations that are supposedly haunted or which have other
legends attached to them. He is constantly asked if he has ever seen a ghost himself (to which the answer is sadly not). Much of his spare
time is taken up with searching for missing car keys and/or spectacles. His motto is: ‘Those who have never attempted anything can honestly
say they’ve never failed at anything’ and he sometimes wishes he could live by this rule. He has previously written Mysterious Lincolnshire
(2007) and Mysterious Northamptonshire (2009) and is currently working on a novel inspired by some of the strange tales he has learned.
