More Southampton Changing Faces

More Southampton Changing Faces is the sequel to Southampton’s Changing Faces, published in 2005 by the same author. Now published in collaboration with Southampton City Council, Jim Brown has been able to draw heavily on the massive photographic collections held by Heritage Services, particularly the Archive Service. As such, readers are now treated to previously unpublished views, which appear alongside the author’s modern photographs, taken from as near as possible to the same position, repeatedly showing startling changes.
Southampton has, as a city, changed almost beyond recognition in the post-war era. Large areas of the lower town and upper Shirley have been extensively developed in the post-war era, as large tower blocks or flats replace the terraced houses, corner shops or public houses. Fortunately, the City Council had the foresight to take widespread photographs before properties were demolished, bequeathing to subsequent local historians a wealth of invaluable material.
Incorporating nearly 400 illustrations, Jim Brown’s stunning guide is certain to arouse a good deal of nostalgia among those who remember the former districts, and to pique the interest of those new to the city. Street scenes that are now only a faint memory for the immediate post-war generation are vividly re-enacted, buildings that have been long-demolished are displayed anew for all to appreciate. A delight for residents and historians alike, More Southampton Changing Faces looks sure to repeat the success of its predecessor.
