More Images of Sheffield

MORE IMAGES OF SHEFFIELD TO SAVOUR!
Here is another generous collection of abundant local images, guaranteed to delight anyone who likes to take the occasional
trip down memory lane . . .or who simply enjoys remembering Sheffield through the years, discovering or recalling how
familiar places and landmarks have looked when caught by camera or artist at different moments in history.
The success of Images of Sheffield, published in 1993, came largely because the book was not just another compilation
of photographs but, with careful and varied selection, plus detailed captions, offered something much more rewarding and
satisfying. Indeed, it was a volume for the whole family to treasure.
Mainly drawn from the files of the picture library at The Star, but supplemented with illustrations gathered from other
sources, this second collection forms an ideal companion volume, for while it is just as representative of the city and features
intriguing shots of the central areas, it also attempts to give extra attention to suburban Sheffield, sporting Sheffield and
many other aspects of the local scene.
And while every picture tells a story, each image is supported with words which will increase the reader’s knowledge, offer illumination or amusement, or simply a pleasing jog to the memory!

About the Author

KEITH FARNSWORTH, who compiled the pictures in the original Images of Sheffield, and in this second volume, is a well-known local author
and journalist. Between 1963 and 1978 he worked for both The Star and the old Morning Telegraph (being sports editor of the latter newspaper
in the 1970s); then spent eight years editing Quality, the Sheffield chamber of commerce journal, before turning to freelance writing in 1985.
Since 1982 he has produced eleven books on a variety of sporting, social and industrial topics, including Sheffield Wednesday: A Complete
Record 1867-1987, Before and After Bramall Lane, SheffieIds East Enders and a history of H. Turner & Son, Bringing News to Sheffield and a
history of football in Sheffield is one of a number of current projects.
Although best known as a sports writer who contributes to various publications and covers
football for the Daily Telegraph, his enthusiasm for Sheffield and Its social and industrial history
is again evident in More Images of Sheffield: which is probably not surprising considering that
he was brought up in Pitsmoor, Attercliffe and Brightside, all districts which have since changed
almost beyond recognition; while almost every house he lived in as a boy and most of the business
premises where he worked before becoming a journalist at 24 have long since been demolished amid the reshaping of Sheffield.
