When Manchester United captured the Football League Cup during the 2009–10 season it brought their trophy haul to 37 with 18 top-flight successes, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups, three European Cups and one Cup-Winners’ Cup. As such it now seems only a matter of time before they catch and overtake their Lancashire rivals Liverpool, currently three trophies ahead, to become the most successful English side ever. Like all great clubs, however, it all had to start with a first success, and in the case of Manchester United it came just over 100 years ago when only a few years after almost going bust they captured the First Division title at the end of the 1907–08 season with a then record number of points.
