Leyton Orient Greats - Signed Copy

Orient fans rarely get to glimpse truly great footballers, unless, of course, they are playing for the other team. But on the occasions that a player in the home strip does capture the imagination of the Brisbane Road crowd – be it through their skill, passion, commitment or loyalty – he is cherished forever.

This book pays tribute to 12 of these Orient greats: Peter Allen, Sid Bishop, Steve Castle, Alan Comfort, Stan Charlton, Laurie Cunningham, Tony Grealish, Tommy Johnston, Peter Kitchen, Matt Lockwood, Dennis Rofe, Tommy Taylor. These are players who gave their all for the club and who made afternoons in East London a genuine pleasure.

Through extensive interviews with the players themselves, their teammates, managers and the fans who watched them play, this book gives a real insight into these Orient favourites, on and off the pitch. Find out how Alan Comfort nearly missed his own wedding to appear in the Play-off Final of 1989; why manager Benny Fenton made Stan Charlton repeatedly practise tying his boot laces; what Tommy Taylor really thought of striker Carl Griffiths; why Tony Grealish had to give up Gaelic football; and why not one single player spoke to Matt Lockwood when he first arrived at the club.

There are many more stories inside this book which, spanning over 50 years of football, paints a picture of one of the country’s most colourful clubs.

About the Author

MATT SIMPSON is a Hackney-based journalist and lifelong Orient fan. He attended his first game at Brisbane Road in 1979, aged seven – a dreary 2–0 loss to Ipswich in the FA Cup. Despite this, he fell in love with the club and has remained a supporter ever since. He can usually be found in the West Stand with a look of weary resignation on his face. This is his first book.
