Images of Loughborough

Images of Loughborough and District is a fascinating new book featuring the town of Loughborough and the 13 hamlets and villages that surround it. Each chapter of this book includes historic photographs and some often unusual drawings and engravings.
The ‘Off The Salt Way’ chapter covers the villages of Cotes, Prestwold, Burton-on-the-Wolds and Walton-on-the-Wolds. The chapter on Loughborough has a particular emphasis on the markets, museums, Great Central Railway and ‘The Bells’, a collection of bells produced in the town including the famous bell for St Paul’s Cathedral, the Great Paul, which was cast in 1882.
‘The Soar Valley’ chapter focuses on the villages of Barrow-upon-Soar, Mountsorrel and Quorn, the village where modern fox hunting was pioneered by ‘the father of fox hunting’ Mr Hugo Meynell. There is also an in-depth look at the villages to the west of Loughborough, including Garendon Park, Shepshed, Dishley and Hathern. Woodhouse, Beaumanor Hall and Woodhouse Eaves are also investigated, in the chapter entitled ‘“Eaves” and the Woods’.
Many other fascinating aspects of the area are also explored, including the Grand Union Canal as it makes its way along the Soar Valley to Loughborough.
Religion has always played an important part of village life in this part of the country, and this book contains a fine historic record of the monuments and churches that were built and erected throughout the district.
Containing a captivating collection of early 20th-century photographs, Images of Loughborough and District provides a glimpse into the region’s beautiful and historic past.

About the author

Trevor Hickman was born in the village of Wymondham and from an early age has been interested in local history, receiving his first batch of local photographs at the age of 10. His main interest has always been in book restoration, and when in 1955 he was awarded a City and Guilds bronze medal for fine bookbinding, this resulted in a career change.
As a consultant and director of two publishing organisations, he designed and marketed books with a major interest in local history, particularly in Leicestershire. He taught bookbinding at the School of Printing in Leicester until his retirement and has since compiled many books on local history, including The History of Stilton Cheese (Sutton Publishing) and Historic Cheeses: Leicestershire, Stilton & Stichelton (Breedon Publishing).
