Throughout the last century, photographers of the Leicester Mercury have been faithfully recording life in Leicester to produce a precious archive of the changing face of the city. The original narrow roadways leading out of Leicester have become dual-carriageways, the horse-drawn vehicles have disappeared from our streets, the trams have come and gone, and whole areas have been redeveloped as greenfields have become new estates. Indeed, Leicester itself has extended to encompass the villages of Aylestone, Knighton, Evington, Belgrave and Humberstone. And all the time photographers have been there to capture the ever-changing story.

No period saw a greater change than that prior to the 1970s and the Leicester Mercury is delighted to introduce this publication Images of Leicester which comprises photographs taken from their archives which hold a vast collection of information carefully assembled over many years, through two world wars, countless Royal visits, historic occasions and celebrations and, perhaps most important of all, a flavour of Leicester’s everyday life through the decades.

Images of Leicester captures these shifting moments in time and provides a fascinating glimpse of the city and its people over 70 years. It is a book which will delight Leicester folk everywhere.
