The Illustrated History of Nottingham's Suburbs (Second Edition)

When the first edition of The Illustrated History of Nottingham’s Suburbs was published in 2003 it did, of necessity, reflect the period up to the end of the twentieth century. As almost a decade of the 21st century has elapsed since then, the second edition supplements the earlier edition by looking at the districts which grew in the latter years of last century and have not changed as much as some others. The opportunity has been taken in this new addition to include some additional illustrations.
Whilst there have obviously been some changes in all the districts, some of them have seen more radical changes. An example of this has been the operation some five years ago of the Nottingham Express Transit scheme, now universally known as the tram. This has had a direct impact on three of the districts as well as the city centre.

The Illustrated History of Nottingham's Suburbs shows how the countryside, farms and villages around Nottingham developed into the urban streets, residential areas, shopping districts and industrial estates that are so familiar today. In the course of the last 200 years, the outskirts of the city have been transformed and expanded in a way that would astonish Nottingham residents of just a few generations ago.

In this detailed and fully illustrated account of the suburbs, Geoffrey Oldfield offers a concise history of each district and also features local anecdotes and folklore. He recalls remarkable, sometimes bizarre episodes and notable individuals who played their part in the story. His survey is essential reading and reference for anyone who takes an interest in their neighbourhood and in the complex, surprising history of the city itself.

The history of districts, as diverse as Basford, Bulwell, Lenton, Sneinton, The Park, Radford, Arnold, Carlton, Beeston and West Bridgford, are recalled in his survey, as are the stories of the many other suburbs that make up the modern city.
