Exploring North Yorkshire's History

Exploring North Yorkshire’s History – is a journey through the wonderfully varied landscape of North Yorkshire, and examines its rich history through contemporary colour photographs and words. North Yorkshire is England’s largest county and being almost 100 miles wide and 65 miles long offers some of the country’s most stunning scenery, from the breathtaking east coastline to the fabulous National Parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. Many of the areas we will explore throughout our journey have been designated Areas of Outstanding Beauty. North Yorkshire is a place of history and legend, with its many ruined castles and abbeys.
Our journey starts in the ancient city of York. Once briefly the centre of the Roman Empire, this stupendous city has a wealth of history and is truly a jewel in the crown. As we continue through the county we will meet such historical figures as Captain Cook and Guy Fawkes, and visit many delightful places. We will examine its battles such as the lesser known Battle of Fulford in 1066 and the notorious Battle of Towton during the Wars of the Roses (the bloodiest battle ever fought on British soil). Our journey will take us from ancient times to the more recent in which we will discover what makes North Yorkshire truly a special place. Exploring North Yorkshire’s History is a wonderful book for anyone wishing to learn more about this delightful county through a combination of stunning full colour photographs and informative text.

About the Author

Nigel A. Ibbotson is a published author and award winning photographer based in West Yorkshire. With almost thirty years experience behind him his work has covered most aspects of photography. The work that he has undertaken has been varied - from weddings to advertising and portraits to press. Nigel’s work has taken him to a wide range of places throughout Europe and has been exhibited throughout many countries.
Nigel is passionate about producing images of the highest quality and previously published work includes Exploring West Yorkshire’s History. His greatest interest is for landscape photography not only of his local Yorkshire but the British Isles as a whole. It was this interest that convinced Nigel to give up the hustle and bustle of commercial photography and concentrate on producing breath-taking landscapes. Travelling extensively throughout the United Kingdom his collection of photographs is constantly growing. As a landscape photographer Nigel strongly believes that to greatly increase our appreciation of the regions we need to study it’s history and the parts that have been played by the hands of nature and of man to mould the land to what we see today. A man proud of his Yorkshire roots Nigel is enthusiastic about his subject - a passion which reflects throughout his work.
